Since my last post, Mike Lowell re-signed with the Red Sox, and Torii Hunter surprisingly signed with the Angels. That gives me a little relief, because I did not want either of these guys. I mean, look at the money that Hunter is going to get...$90 million over 5 years...that's $18 million a year for a career .271 hitter who has hit more than 30 HR's in a season only once. Sure he is a gold glove center fielder, but will he still have those same skills in 4 years when he is 36 and still making $18 million? I don't think so.
What worries me, though, is that these signings might cause Ned Colletti to panic. He sees these moves being made, and he might feel forced into doing something that he shouldn't do. My advise to Ned...Don't do it! Don't overpay for a guy just to get attention. Don't trade away our best prospects for a guy who will be a free agent in 2009. It's just not worth it.
By all means, if the right deal falls into his lap, I want him to take it. We do have a lot of minor league talent that has no where to go because they are blocked by guys on the current team. If one or two of them can be traded for a decent starting pitcher or reliever, then I'm all for it. I just don't want to see our 3 or 4 best guys traded for Miguel Cabrera.
When it's all said and done, I think that Colletti will sign Aaron Rowand, and then trade away players like Ethier, Chin-Lung Hu, and James McDonald for a guy like Joe Blanton. While I'm not sold on Rowand, and have written some negative things about him, he does goes go all out on every play and has a great attitude. I like his style of play, and he would probably be good for the clubhouse. Also, if we could get Blanton, we would have a very solid rotation, and I wouldn't be too upset about giving up those prospects. I'm not sure if this will happen, but since I know that Colletti will make at least at least a few moves, I prefer them to be the ones I wrote about above rather than some other stupid moves.

What do these players have in common: Kevin Brown, Shawn Green, Juan Pierre, Darren Dreifort, Nomar Garciaparra, JD Drew, Jason Schmidt, and Rafael Furcal? They all have Dodger fans leaning over the porcelain God until their contracts finally went/will go away. At least this list does not include Greg Gagne, Adrian Beltre, Chan Ho Park, or the only player on BOTH lists: JD Drew.
So, tread cautiously Mr. Colletti. Do not make an "impact" signing like Furcal or Pierre this winter. I would much rather see Kemp in CF than Torii Hunter at $18 million a year(Angels clearly have too much money since he replaces Gary Matthews Jr who makes $10 million for each of the next 4 years). Aaron Rowand? I still prefer Kemp and $15 million in my bank account.
So far, you have done the right thing by turning down lopsided trades for Cabrera, who needs to show that he can hit and eat at the same time. As the free agent pool dwindles, please know that most Dodger fans would prefer to play the team we have now than suffer through another five-year blunder of a contract to some under-performing player. Save your money for the contracts that will be needed to keep Russell, Loney, Delwyn Young, Kershaw, et al in the next 3-4 years. I will be much happier if that is how the money is spent, since it means that they have earned it.

It seems very difficult to make a trade without sacrificing a front line player and I consider Ethier one of them. Also when going for a free agent, it leaves someone dangling without a place to play. I haven't found anyone to agree with me, but if it were up to me I'd put Loney in the outfield, future gold glove at 1st and all and move the weak armed even with no HR power, short on height speedster Pierre to 1B. I would not have been against going for A-Rod, but no one else as a FA. I think it would've been dumb not to go all out for him. He's the future. As far as the heavy eating Cabrera goes, as long as it doesn't interfere with his offense I wouldn't mine seeing a few good prospects, including the ones mentioned above, the Dodgers haven't used much, go for him, but apparently the Marlins are not interested unless they get a front line player to come along with them. Unless it's LaRoche a recognized 3B. As far as pitching goes I think we should try to get along with what we got and see how Schmidt is. A 4th starter? Try to get one from within. Go at least through spring training with the present starting rotation. BUT all I and the rest of us can do is hope things happen the way we want it but as I say it's just like watching a movie.

I think you are finding it hard to find agreement that you take two players and switch their positions - - thereby making BOTH spots weak defensively. The solution is NOT to find a place for Pierre, who is sufficiently challenged in any outfield position(don't you remember all the times last year when he wandered after balls that landed ten feet away from him? Left field won't solve that), would be a disaster at 1st base, a traditionally recognized power position. No, the solution is to move Pierre off the team because there is no where he can be effective defensively. I think he makes a great DH for an American League team who has power but lacks a leadoff hitter and speed. That is where Pierre belongs, not taking the place of a gold glove, power hitting first baseman like Loney. The Yankees or Red Sox would be perfect fits for Pierre, and they have the money to pay his bloated salary for the next 4 years.

I might have gone on sooner but I'm a little tick at this changing the password every time I log on. It's mind blowing. I don't know how Girardi will run it but the Yankees usually under Torre use everybody for DH, at one time or another. The Red Sox have David Ortiz as their steady DH. I would imagine that if Colletti wants to trade Pierre he is looking for someone who would take him. Really if he doesn't fit in here how is he going to fit in anyplace else. Unless as you say with a team that has a lot of long ball hitters. Who might that be? I think trading Pierre is the single most hardest thing to do, at the moment. I can't think of a better way to solve this problem. I also must add Pierre's fielding improved immencely over the season. I only hope I can wake up some morning and read that he's gone. As a Dodger fan for the past 60 years I don't remember such a delegate situation.

I hear the Texas Rangers are looking for a CF, having lost out on the Torii Hunter signing. You are right about the BoSox, DH is tied up in Ortiz, but they are looking to trade Coco Crisp and Pierre would fill that spot nicely. I think he would be easy to trade as he is a consistent 200 hit guy, 50 stolen bases, and a CF. The only two things working against him are: his defensive play in CF and his salary. While the Dodgers cannot teach a veteran like Pierre to improve markedly in CF, they can offer to pay the first $2 million of his salary. At $6 million a year, I think lots of teams would be interested(Yankees, Rangers, Giants, A's, San Diego, and others). The other plus about Pierre is that he is a very hard worker who gets to the park early and takes nothing for granted. If the Dodgers do retain him, maybe this will rub off on Kemp(I am sure this is who Jeff Kent referred to when he talked about younger players "not getting it").

They don't need to overpay for a 30 HR guy, though they probably will in Andruw Jones. I think Kemp and Loney could easily reach that level. And, Kent, Russell, Ethier, and LaRoche could all hit in the 15-25 range. No, there will only be a Dodgers Boycott if Colletti trades his key younger players for a guy who might hit 10 extra homers and cost $15 million extra dollars.

Is everybody having problems with passwords? ****I agree with everything you say about Pierre, above,DFKTAX, but you left out his poor throwing arm, I think, maybe beside his lack of power for an outfielder are the two things that are hurting the team, otherwise his fielding is as good as anybody elses. I have to disagree that any of the teams you mention could have anymore success with him that our team has. He would take these two problems with him wherever he may go. I think Colletti would be glad to pay the remainder of his salary, since it would be only part of the cost for this big error.
